What Are Merchant Mariner Physicals?

Merchant Mariner physicals are a type of military physical examination. They are required for admittance to the U.S. Coast Guard. They may also be required for grade raises if an applicant hasn’t completed one within three years of applying.
Merchant Mariner physicals determine if the examinee is healthy and free from medical conditions and/or physical limitations that might prevent them from performing their duties or affecting vehicle operation.

Periodic Health Assessment (PHA) and Mental Health Assessment Physicals are a type of routine physical and mental health examination required by the military. They are designed to keep servicemen and women physically fit and medically and mentally ready to deploy at any time.
They look for warning signs of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic conditions as well as mental health disorders. PHA and MHA physical exams typically must be completed every year.
